Testicular Cancer

What is Testicular Cancer?

Happy Indian Man
A part of male reproductive system, testicles, which are located in the scrotum, produces male sex hormones and sperms for reproduction. Testicular cancer is a rare cancer that occurs in the testicles (testes). Testicular cancers usually begin in the germ cells — the cells that produce immature sperm. What causes germ cells to become cancerous isn't known.

Symptoms of Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer usually affects only one testicle. One may feel one or more than one of the below mentioned symptoms:
A lump or enlargement in either testicle
A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
A dull ache in the abdomen or groin
A sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum
Pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum
Enlargement or tenderness of the breasts
Back pain
Seek medical help immediately from Dr. Raghunath if you detect any pain, swelling or lumps in your testicles or groin area or you’ve any of these symptoms persistent for more than 2 weeks.

Diagnosis of Testicular Cancer

In rare instances, some men discover testicular cancer unknowingly or while doing a self-examination for lumps. Sometimes, a doctor may detect a lump during a routine check-up.
Dr. Raghunath may recommend some other tests for diagnosis like:
A testicular ultrasound
Blood tests including CA 125
Radical inguinal orchiectomy (surgical removal of the affected testicle, which is then tested to determine if the lump is cancerous)
CT scan to find out the extend of spread
Based on these above tests, the testicular cancer will be staged from 0 to III. By stage III, the cancer is considered advanced and may have spread to other areas of the body.

Treatment Options

Testicular cancer is highly treatable, even at advanced stages. Based on the type and stage of testicular cancer, you may have one of several treatments, or a combination.
Surgery: Radical inguinal orchiectomy is the main treatment for almost all stages and types of testicular cancer. If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, doctor might perform a surgery called retroperitoneal lymph node dissection to remove the nearby lymph nodes. Most of the time, surgery is the only treatment required.
Radiation therapy: It is a treatment option that's sometimes used in people who have the seminoma type of testicular cancer; usually recommended after surgical removal of testicle.
Chemotherapy: Some drugs may be used to kill cancer cells. It may be your only treatment, depending on your tumor or may be recommended before or after lymph node removal surgery.

Dr. Raghunath is one of the best doctors I have ever met. He is patient, is always smiling to make his patients comfortable, and remembers in great detail everything a patient tells him during every round of check-up. I consulted him for my dad. He explained everything well and gave us options before finalizing a course for treatment. He is very clear with his post-op instructions as well. His team, including Dr. Tejas, Sangamesh and Girish, is wonderful as well. They ensure availability for the patient every step of the way.
