Prostate Cancer

What is Prostate Cancer?

Old Indian man
The prostate is a small walnut shaped gland located just below the bladder. It supplies part of the seminal fluid (semen), which mixes & transports sperm from the testes.

Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the prostate, it is called prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer cells can travel through blood vessels or lymph nodes to reach other parts of the body. Such a condition is called metastatic prostate cancer.

No one knows why or how prostate cancer starts.

Screening for Prostate Cancer

Cancer screening means looking for cancer before it causes symptoms. A blood test called a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test measures the level of PSA in the blood. PSA is a substance made by the prostate. A high level of PSA may indicate prostate infection, inflammation, enlargement or cancer.

Consult with Dr Raghunath to get screened for Prostate Cancer.

Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer

If you have a high PSA value during your screening, Dr Raghunath SK may recommend you to undergo the below test to determine if you have prostate cancer.
Transrectal Ultrasound :  A probe is inserted into the rectum and high-energy sound waves (ultrasound) are bounced off the prostate to create a picture of the prostate.
MRI :  Dr Raghunath may recommend a MRI, which will help him conduct and guide the biopsy procedure.
Biopsy : A biopsy is the main tool for diagnosing prostate cancer. During this procedure a small piece of tissue is removed from the prostate and looked at under a microscope to see if there are cancer cells.

Grading & Staging of Cancer

One of the outcome of biopsy is the Gleason score. This determines how aggressively the cancer is spreading in your body. Score ranges from 2 - 10 , higher the score more fast it can spread.

Dr Raghunath will then determine how far the cancer has spread in the body. This is called staging of cancer. Depending upon the stage of cancer appropriate treatment plan will be recommended.

Treatment Options

Dr Raghunath along with his team of medical & radiation oncologist will help you to determine your treatment plan based on multiple conditions like grade & stage of cancer, your age, your health conditions, etc. You will be explained various options. You & Dr Raghunath can together decide on the next course of action.
Active surveillance :  Low-grade prostate cancer may not need treatment right away. Dr Raghunath will monitor your cancer through regular PSA test, DRE, & biopsies. Treatment to be started only if cancer grows or causes symptoms.
Surgery :  Surgery for prostate cancer involves removing the prostate gland (radical prostatectomy), some surrounding tissue and a few lymph nodes. Dr Raghunath recommends robotic surgery and in some cases depending on patient condition, might opt for a open surgery. Click on this link to know more about Radical Prostatectomy.
Radiation Therapy :  Radiation therapy uses high energy rays to kill cancer cells.
Chemo Therapy :  Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancer cells anywhere in the body. It is used for advanced stages of prostate cancer when cancer has spread to other organs. Often used with other treatment options.
Harmone Therapy :  Prostate cancer cell need androgen (the male harmone) to grow. Harmone therapy is to reduces or suppresses androgen generation, thereby stopping the growth of cancer cells. This is done through medications and/or surgery.
Other Options :  There are other options like Cryotherapy, Immunotherapy, HIFU/Focal therapy, etc.

Dr. Raghunath S K is the very best surgeon ever I have come across in my lifetime. I was diagnosed with carcinoma prostate and luckily we came to know Dr. Raghunath is the right person to be consulted on this matter to proceed further.

He is a very gentleman and explained in depth on the required surgical procedures with all necessary guidance which gives confidence to be prepared mentally and emotionally.

His surgery is 100% successful with no post operative complications with normal diet. Incontinence stopped within 6 weeks of surgery completely, now I could get back to normal working life as before.

I am really very fortunate to be treated by Dr Raghunath and his excellent dedicated team.

Three months back my father was detectected with Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate with Gleason score 3+3 and PSA level 11.3 ng/ml. Since the time biopsy was done we consulted Dr. Raghunath and very honestly and patiently he explained the possible therapies, as well as outcome and side effects of the treatment. Undoubtedly the robotic surgery he and his team performed was successful. The best part is, from the time of consultation till now, Dr. Raghunath was always prompt to reply to any doubts, any concerns we had. His calm nature and polite behavior provide lot of confidence to the patients. My dad is recovering, his PSA is now negligible, able to regain urinary continence by 80% and credit definitely goes to Dr. Raghunath. I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Tejas for his kind cooperation specifically when Dr. Raghunath was on leave. Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge Sangamesh for coordinating all the processes with his calm and helping nature. Thank you team.
