Adrenal Tumours

Treatment

What is Adrenal Tumours?

Adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of both the kidneys. They produce hormones that regulate metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, stress response and other essential functions.
Adrenal cancer is a rare cancer that develops in one or both of these glands. Though it can occur at any age, it’s most likely to children younger than 5 and adults in their 40s and 50s.

Symptoms of Adrenal Tumours :

Most growths in the adrenal glands are noncancerous. Other signs of adrenal cancer include:

  • Weight gain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pink or purple stretch marks on the skin
  • Hormone changes in women that might cause excess facial hair, hair loss on the head and irregular periods
  • Hormone changes in men that might cause enlarged breast tissue and shrinking testicles
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Back pain
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight without trying

Diagnosis of Adrenal Tumours :

Dr. Raghunath will conduct some tests to diagnose adrenal cancer:

  • Blood and urine tests to check unusual level of hormones produced by the adrenal glands.
  • Imaging tests like CT, MRI or PET scan to detect any unusual growth and to see if the cancer has spread to any other parts of body.
  • Surgical removal of adrenal glands and its laboratory analysis

Treatment Options :

If found early, adrenal cancer is curable, however, if the cancer has spread outside the gland, cure becomes less likely but progression can be delayed. Treatment of adrenal cancer usually involves surgery to remove all of the cancer. Other treatments might be used to prevent the cancer from coming back or if surgery isn't an option. Dr. Raghunath will suggest the most appropriate treatment plan suitable for you.

  • Surgery called adrenalectomy (removal of the entire affected adrenal gland) can be done to remove the entire cancer
  • Radiation therapy can be given to kill the remaining cancer cells
  • Chemotherapy can be an option to slow the progression of the cancer or kill any remaining cancer cells

Life After Treatment :

  • Post treatment, Dr. Raghunath will suggest a frequent follow-up plan in the first few months but this might become less often as time goes on. Doctor will also prescribe some medications to prevent the cancer from coming back and to protect against any hormonal deficiency arising after gland removal.
  • Dr. Ragunath will also suggest periodical CT scans to check the cancer status and blood and urine tests to evaluate the hormone levels.
